Many Hackney residents are impacted by the Cladding Scandal.
They are now mortgage prisoners, facing life-changing bills and an uncertain future. We must find a solution quickly!
Today, I urged the Government to schedule more time in Parliament to discuss this crisis.
After 10 years of austerity, Hackney Council’s budget has been cut by nearly half meaning vital services are being squeezed.
The new money promised by this Government doesn’t go far enough to make up for a decade of cuts.
The Windrush scandal exposed the Home Office’s systemic problems. Too many in Hackney are being let down.
To cope with Windrush and the potential non-Caribbean Commonwealth applications as well as EU citizens major improvements must be made.
I repeatedly challenged the Government to step up its efforts and ensure mistakes aren’t repeated.
I’m standing up for Hackney residents facing large bills to replace cladding that is now deemed unsafe.

The bedroom tax policy does not work.
On one estate, the Wenlock Barn estate in Hoxton, 74 families are hit by this policy and they do not have an option to move to a different property.
If the Prime Minister was serious about his desire to be a one nation Conservative, it is a policy that he should abolish right now.

We’re living through a climate emergency.
We need to reach a net zero carbon economy as soon as possible.
I’m proud that Labour-run Hackney Council is leading the way. They’re fast greening their fleet of vehicles, sourcing 100% of their energy from renewable sources by 2020, and working with residents to promote green initiatives. The solar panels and green energy co-op set up by residents in Banister House, where I filmed my video, are an excellent example.
Hackney has a housing crisis.
I see the impact of overcrowding, insecure private tenancies, and unaffordable house prices at every advice surgery I hold.
We urgently need a Labour Government to build properly affordable social-rented homes, and stand-up for private renters’ rights.
