The high cost of Home Office fees means too many young people in Hackney and London are priced out of citizenship.
I secured a Westminster Hall debate on immigration and nationality application fees to press this issue. These debates are opportunities for backbench MPs to raise issues and force a Minister to respond. I pointed out that currently a young person applying for citizenship must complete five separate costly applications. A single ‘leave to remain’ application costs £2593. This must be renewed every 30 months for ten years. You can watch the full debate here or read the transcript here.
I am working with We Belong and other organisations in Hackney to continue raising these concerns in Parliament. We Belong have calculated that over the past six years, these Home Office fees have increased by 331%. Hear their story here.
