A number of constituents have contacted me to raise their concerns about supertrawlers (large fishing vessels) operating in Marine Protected Areas. I wrote to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and received this response.

I am clear that the Government must take steps now to ensure the health of our future fish stocks and protect our UK fishing industry. Environmental sustainability must be at heart of any fisheries management decisions. This includes a ban on supertrawlers in Marine Protected Areas. I will continue to work with my frontbench Labour colleagues to press the Government on this issue.
