Affordable housing

Hackney is at the sharp end of the housing crisis, with high rents and many in insecure temporary accommodation. ‘Affordable housing’ set as 80% of private rents is not affordable for people in Hackney in temporary accommodation or overcrowded housing.

Families should not be waiting years for a decent and properly affordable home - if levelling up means anything, it must include action from the Government to build more properly affordable homes in Hackney. See me press the most senior civil servant at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities on this in the clip above and see here to watch the hearing in full.

Hackney Council is already leading the way on this and is working hard to support families in temporary accommodation and overcrowded housing. Since 2011, the council’s not-for-profit housebuilding programme has directly delivered more than 1,000 new homes in Hackney for those in need of a council home. More than half of the council homes built are for genuinely affordable social rent, shared ownership, or Hackney Living Rent.
