Post office closures

Meg has raised her concerns with the Post Office about its plans in South Hackney.

The Post Office is considering four offices for closure in Hackney South. Meg is lobbying the Post Office to press home the needs of Hackney residents.

Meg said, “I do not intend to oppose every closure, the Post Office is losing £3.5 million per week so I recognise that there is some need for change.

I will be focussing efforts on areas where the closures leave a gap in services.”

Meg has raised concerns with the Post Office about the specific access needs of Hackney residents.

Meg said, “Fifty-two per cent of Hackney Homes rent transactions are done through the post office and many residents do not have a bank account. The paucity of bank branches in Hackney also makes it difficult for people who handle cash to manage without a reasonable supply of post offices.”

“I am concerned about the Murray Grove post office which I believe is the wrong choice for closure. I will be working hard to try to ensure that particular branch stays open.”

Meg is working with Hoxton Councillors to oppose the Murray Grove closure and a petition is being presented to the Post Office. She is also pressing for guarantees that remaining post offices are made fit for purpose and provide a better service.
